Stewed Beef in Tomato Sauce with Oranges

by Editorial Staff

Meat with fruit can be called a classic combination in the cooking of some regions of the world. The spicy tomato sauce with oranges makes the beef gourmet, and the long stewing – soft and tender. It is not too difficult to prepare, but the result is a hearty meat dish in the Greek style, with a certain “zest” in taste and aroma.

Cook: 1 hour 40 mins

Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • Beef (pulp) – 800 g
  • Tomatoes in their own juice – 300 g
  • Orange – 1 pc. (200 g)
  • Bulb onions – 2 pcs. (200 g)
  • Garlic – 5-6 cloves
  • Balsamic vinegar – 2 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil – 3 tbsp
  • Ground cinnamon – 0.5 teaspoon
  • Ground red hot pepper – on the tip of a knife
  • Ground sweet paprika – 0.5 teaspoon
  • Allspice peas – 4-5 pcs.
  • Dried cloves (in buds) – 2 pcs.
  • Bay leaf – 1 pc.
  • Salt – 0.5 teaspoon
  • Ground black pepper – on the tip of a knife

Directions

  1. Wash the meat, pat dry with paper towels, and cut into 3×3 cm pieces.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or saucepan and fry the beef on all sides for 5-7 minutes, until golden brown.
  3. Peel the onions and cut them into medium cubes.
  4. Add the onion to the meat pan, pour in the balsamic vinegar, and fry for another 7-8 minutes, until the onions are soft.
  5. Add the tomatoes in your own juice to the skillet. Stir, cover, and simmer the beef and tomatoes over low heat for 40 minutes.
  6. Peel the garlic, grate on a fine grater, and place in a pan with the meat. Add cloves, black ground and black allspice, salt, paprika, cinnamon, and hot red pepper to the pan.
  7. Wash the orange, cut into wedges with the peel, and transfer to the pan. Stir. Pour in 100 ml of drinking water, cover, and simmer for another 30 minutes.
  8. Beef stewed in tomato sauce with oranges is ready. The dish can be served hot or cold.
  9. Such meat is ideal with any side dish – noodles, vegetables, or cereals.
  10. The slight sourness of the sauce, the pungency, and the rich taste of beef – such a dish can easily become your signature dish.
