Drain the cherries well (the juice is not needed), put them in a saucepan with the sugar and let the sugar melt while the flame is not too hot - stir again and again. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly.
Add the spices and the amaretto (to taste - some take a little less, but I like it best). Let it simmer gently for another 15-25 minutes, depending on how you want the syrup. Fill into glasses.
Lasts quite a long time - I can`t say exactly how long, because with me they are always cleaned away pretty quickly. The specified recipe quantity is sufficient for 2 glasses. The recipe comes from my Italian mother-in-law and is simply delicious.
