Butter a 30 cake pan or line it with baking paper. Preheat the oven to 180 ° C.
Beat the butter until foamy, add the eggs one after the other. Add the buttermilk or milk, salt, spices, herbs, ham and cheese and mix well. Mix the flour and baking powder and fold well into the dough.
Pour the mixture into the prepared cake tin and bake in the middle of the oven for approx. 50 minutes. Let cool in the mold. For a meat-free version, the ham can be replaced with dried tomatoes.
The Appenzeller Cake tastes wonderful warm or lukewarm with a salad or cut into cubes for an aperitif.
