Heat milk, butter, honey and rum until everything is melted. Put the fruit in the warm milk and let it steep until the milk has cooled down.
Mix the flour, baking powder, salt and lemon zest in a bowl. Add the egg and fruit milk to the flour mixture while stirring with a spoon. Stir the dough well, but not too vigorously. Mix the walnuts into the batter. Pour the dough into a greased dish and smooth it out.

You can of course replace the rum with milk. Grandmother Auguste liked to bake this sandwich for Sunday breakfast. The dates can also be replaced by other dried fruit. The cake bread is moist and durable for several days.
