Instructions

  1. Cut the chives into fine rolls.
  2. Brush the pumpernickel thalers with butter. Press the buttered side into the chives rolls one at a time. Drain the Swedish bites well and serve on the buttered side of the taler with the chives.
  3. Cut the onions into fine rings. Garnish each bite with 2 to 3 onion rings and a few drained peppercorns. To finish, sprinkle with some freshly ground black pepper.
  4. These Swedish snacks are called that because my friend, who likes to eat them with me, said they looked like frog eyes - from then on they had their names. Of course, you can also cut small bites out of square pumpernickel and serve the bites in a rectangular shape; but then they are no longer frog eyes.
