Instructions

  1. Put the lard in a large saucepan and let it melt. Cut the onion into large cubes and sauté in the lard. Meanwhile, first cut the red cabbage into four parts and then finely chop it.
  2. Put in the pot. Season well with salt and pepper, the bay leaf and the cloves, add about 1/4 l of water and the vinegar. Dice the apples and add to the red cabbage. Now reduce the heat supply and let the whole thing simmer gently for about two hours.
  3. Stir every now and then. At the end of the cooking time, season again with salt, pepper and sugar. It is best to put bay leaves and cloves in a tea infuser - then you can save yourself having to search for them later. The red cabbage tastes twice as good when warmed up a second time.
