Instructions

  1. Strictly speaking, this has nothing to do with the classic heaven and earth stew - that`s apples. My grandma always called it that and I don`t know a better name for it. Maybe someone knows where the dish comes from and what it`s actually called.
  2. Dice the bacon and onions. Sauté the onions in the butter until translucent, then add the bacon and fry both until the mixture has turned a golden brown color.
  3. At the same time peel the potatoes and dice them into small pieces. Put the potato cubes in a large saucepan and just cover with water. Cook for 5 minutes, then add the bacon and onions as well as the roughly diced pears with the juice on the can and simmer gently for at least 20 minutes. Depending on how salty the bacon is, add salt if necessary.
  4. If the whole thing seems too sweet, you can just use a dash of pear juice and more water instead.
  5. It tastes best when it has gotten cold and warmed up again, so it can be pre-cooked for the next day. A slice of fresh brown bread with butter goes well with it.
