Put the flour in a baking bowl and make a well in the middle. Add the crumbled yeast, 1 teaspoon of sugar, and roughly 1/4 of the milk (lukewarm, around 40°C / 104°F). Mix with some of the flour to form a liquid pre-dough. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
Add the remaining milk, egg, salt, sugar, and butter to the pre-dough. Beat vigorously with a wooden spoon or dough hook until the dough pulls away from the bowl wall. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
Oil your hands lightly. Cut the dough into long pieces and shape them. Arrange close together on a greased baking sheet or in a loaf pan. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 120-210°C (248-410°F). Bake for 25-30 minutes. In the last 2 minutes of baking, brush with melted butter.
