Instructions

  1. Peel and quarter the onions, remove the stalk and peel open the layers, preferably in a bowl. Other types of onion can also be used in addition to or instead of.
  2. Peel the garlic, cut into fine leaves and add. Sprinkle salt, pepper and thyme on top, add olive oil and mix thoroughly. Spread the whole thing in a flat baking dish and pour the white wine over it. Cover well with aluminum foil and stew in the oven at around 200 degrees for at least 45 minutes. (Convenient if you have other dishes in the oven at the same time!)
  3. When the onions are soft, remove the foil and grill for a few minutes so that the top layer caramelizes. The temperature and time vary depending on the oven and taste.
  4. Finally mix in the crème fraiche, add grated cheese to taste and bake for another 10-15 minutes.
  5. It tastes even better when warmed up and is ideal as a grill side dish.
  6. The steaming makes the onions sweet and creamy with the sour cream / cheese. You can also steam the onion mixture in a pan and bake it in the oven later.
  7. Try other herbs and different types of cheese, there are no limits!
