Instructions

  1. Remove, clean and wash the salted herrings. Clean and wash the milk of the herrings. Soak salted herrings and milk for 2 days, changing the water twice a day. Then remove from the water, wash cold and drain.
  2. Peel the onions and cut into thin slices. Prepare a stone pot and alternately layer herrings, onion rings, pickled spices and bay leaves.
  3. Strain the milk, stir in the canned milk until smooth and season the sauce with vinegar and pepper. Pour the sauce over the herrings. Cover the stone pot, put it in a cool place and let the herrings steep for at least 3 days.
  4. The herrings taste good on their own or with jacket potatoes.
