Instructions

  1. Wash the potatoes and carrots and cook with the peel until done (cook the day before - then the vegetables are easier to peel the next day!)
  2. I always use a flat oval plate for this salad. First layer the potatoes, grated on a coarse grater. Many Russians eat fish first, then potatoes. I do it the other way around, so the juice from the herring is caught by the potatoes and does not float in the bowl even after standing for a long time.
  3. The second layer is the herrings, cut into fine small cubes. Third layer is the onion, also cut into small pieces. The 4th layer is made up of 4 - 5 tablespoons of mayonnaise. Then the 5th layer of cooked carrots, coarsely grated.
  4. The 6th layer is now roughly grated or finely diced eggs (keep one egg yolk for decoration). 7th layer of mayonnaise, then 8th layer of coarsely grated beetroot. The 9th layer concludes with mayonnaise again.
  5. Bring everything into shape, cover with cling film and leave to stand in the refrigerator for a few hours or, preferably, overnight. Then just finish decorating and enjoy!
