Instructions

  1. This is how the salad is always made in my Russian family.
  2. Put the herring and the oil in a bowl. Peel and quarter the vegetable onion and cut into thin strips. Add the onions to the matjes fillets in the bowl, mix and let steep for 1/2 hour.
  3. Peel the potatoes and cut them into slices. Coarsely grate the beetroot. Dice eggs.
  4. Remove the matjes and onions from the oil and drain. Cut the herring into thin strips.
  5. Layer half of the ingredients on a large plate or a platter (I always use a pizza plate) so that it looks like a cake.
  6. Pay attention to the order:
  7. Potatoes, herring, onions, eggs, beetroot. Brush with mayonnaise, repeat and coat the edge with mayonnaise.
  8. Let the salad steep for at least 3 hours.
