Beat the butter, sugar and vanilla sugar in a mixing bowl until creamy. Gradually add the eggs. Now add the flour, baking powder, a pinch of salt and milk and work everything into a smooth dough.
Now preheat the waffle iron, brush with a little oil and fry the waffles until golden.
Drain the cherries on a sieve and collect the juice. Let the sugar caramelize in a saucepan and deglaze with the kirsch (if you don`t want to use alcohol, just leave it out) and the cherry stock. Save a few tablespoons of the juice to stir the starch smoothly. Let the cherry stock reduce a little and then add the cherries. Thicken the boiling cherries with the smoothly stirred starch until they have the desired consistency.
Serving:
Place the baked waffles on a plate, dust with powdered sugar and serve the hot cherries on or next to the waffles. If you like it a little sweeter, add some whipped cream on top!
