Mix the sugar and fat until foamy, then add the rest of the ingredients except for the cherries and mix everything into a creamy mixture. Pit the cherries, quarter them and stir in as well.
Grease a springform pan (24 cm diameter) and pour in the batter. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 1/4 hours. If the cake gets too dark, cover briefly with aluminum foil.
