Stewed cabbage is not uncommon on our table. Often such a dish serves as a side dish. But what to do on days when neither fish nor meat is on the menu? Add nutritious and healthy lentils to stewed cabbage with carrots and onions, and you get a full-fledged lunch or dinner, hearty and tasty. Thanks to the spices, the dish turns out to be very aromatic, and the tomato adds a slight sourness!
Ingredients
White cabbage – 250 g
Chipped red lentils – 100 g
Onions – 80 g (1 pc.)
Carrots – 100 g (1 pc.)
Tomato – 150 g (1 pc.)
Garlic – 5 g (1 clove)
Vegetable oil – 30 ml (2 tablespoons)
Bay leaf – 1 pc.
Dried thyme – 0.5 teaspoon (to taste)
Parsley (I have chopped, frozen) – 5 g
Salt to taste
Ground black pepper – to taste
Directions
We prepare all the necessary products. My lentils are chopped red, but any will do. The main thing is to take into account that the cooking time of different varieties is different.
Remove the top leaves from the cabbage, cut out the stump. Cut the cabbage into squares with a side of 1-1.5 cm. Cut the peeled carrots into quarters. Cut the peeled onion into small cubes. Cut the tomato into small pieces.
Preheat a frying pan with vegetable oil, put carrots and onions there, and sauté over medium heat for 7-10 minutes.
Add the cabbage. Reduce heat to low and simmer cabbage covered for 15-20 minutes.
If necessary, if the juice released from the cabbage is not enough, pour in a little water.
We wash the lentils, changing the water several times. If you have chipped lentils, like mine, then you need to rinse them especially thoroughly, since they often contain a lot of garbage. Add lentils to the stewed cabbage, pour 300 ml of hot water, stir and after boiling, cook on minimum heat for 10 minutes. During this time, my lentils became soft but did not have time to boil.
Add tomato to stewed cabbage with lentils. Mix and cook for another 5 minutes.
Add dried thyme, salt, and pepper to taste. Add bay leaves and herbs. Simmer for one minute.
Finely chop the peeled garlic or pass through a press and add to the finished dish. Mix and remove from the stove.
Cover the pan with a lid and let the stewed cabbage with lentils brew for 15 minutes.
We serve stewed cabbage with lentils to the table as an independent dish or side dish.
