  • Ground black pepper – 0.5-1 teaspoon
  • Vinegar (9% or other, optional) – to taste

  1. Peel the herring from the skin, cut off the head and tail, separate the ridge. Choose all the bones carefully. Cut the fillet into slices.

  2. Wash the apples. Cut into 4 pieces, peel and seed.
  3. Peel the onion, wash, cut into 4 parts.
  4. Cut the crust off a slice of the loaf. Soak the loaf in boiled water, squeeze.
  5. Pass the herring fillet, apples, loaf, onion and butter through a meat grinder.

  6. Add ground pepper and vinegar to the resulting mass.
  7. Mix everything well. Herring forshmak is ready.
