Toast the coarsely crushed grains and bay leaves in a soup pot SHORTLY until dry. Brown the onion dry. Pour in water, add all ingredients. The meat should be barely covered. Bring to the boil and simmer on a low setting (electric stove) covered for approx. 90 minutes.
That makes a great meat broth that can be used universally.
