Ingredients

  • 25 slices bacon, very thin
  • 750 g potato (s)
  • 2 onions)
  • 200 g cheese, rated
  • 4 egg (s)
  • 300 ml sour cream
  • 1 bay leaf
  • salt and pepper
  • 20 g butter for fryin
  • 20 g lard for reasin the pan

Instructions

  1. Peel the onions, dice finely and sweat with the bay leaf in the butter until translucent. Cut the potatoes into very thin slices.
  2. Rub a deep pan with the lard, then lay out the bacon slices from the center in a star shape so that the ends protrude over the edge of the pan. Lay out a layer of potato slices, season with salt, pepper, then sprinkle some onion cubes and some grated cheese on top. Build up several layers in the same way, finish with a layer of potatoes.
  3. Beat the eggs in the sour cream and pour the mixture over the potato cake. The top layer of potatoes should just be covered. Fold the ends of the spring bacon inside out and bake the pill cake in the oven preheated to 180 degrees for about an hour. Use a fork or toothpick to check the firmness of the potatoes.
  4. Let the potato cake rest for a few minutes in the switched off oven, then pour off the fat and turn the pill cake out onto a large platter to serve.
