Potato Casserole with Meatballs and Cheese (in the Oven)

An interesting, tasty, and satisfying dish for the whole family – potato casserole with meatballs. The preparation of such a dish is very simple: grated potatoes with the addition of sour cream, eggs, and melted cheese are baked with hearty meatballs – meatballs. The cheese crust on top of the potatoes makes the casserole even more appetizing. It turns out very tasty and original!

Ingredients

  • Potatoes – 850 g (peeled – 700 g)
  • Minced meat (I have pork and beef) – 450 g
  • Onions – 200 g
  • Sour cream – 100 g
  • Eggs – 2 pcs.
  • White bread (loaf) – 60 g
  • Milk – 100 ml
  • Garlic – 2 cloves
  • Processed cheese – 1 pc. (90-100 g)
  • Hard cheese – 50 g
  • Salt to taste
  • Dried oregano – 2/3 teaspoon
  • Ground black pepper – to taste
  • Sunflower oil – 30 ml (2 tablespoons)
  • Green onion (for serving) – 3-4 feathers

Directions

  1. Break the bread into pieces (if you wish, you can pre-cut the crust), put it in a bowl, and fill it with milk. We leave the bread for 10 minutes.
  2. Peel the onions and cut them into small cubes.
  3. In a bowl, combine the minced meat, egg, half of the chopped onion, salt, and black pepper. Add bread soaked in milk there.
  4. Mix everything well until smooth.
  5. Peel the potatoes, grate them on a coarse grater, and put them in a bowl.
  6. Rub the processed cheese on a coarse grater and add to the potatoes.
  7. We peel the garlic and pass it through a press. Add sour cream, egg, 2/3 teaspoons of salt, black pepper, oregano, and garlic, peeled and passed through a press, to a bowl with grated potatoes.
  8. And also add the remaining chopped onions to the potato mass.
  9. Mix everything well.
  10. Grease a baking dish (I have a size of 24×20 cm) with vegetable oil. Put 2/3 of the potatoes in a mold in an even layer.
  11. From minced meat, we form 8 large identical balls-meatballs.
  12. Put the meatballs on top of the potatoes.
  13. Then we spread the rest of the potato mass. We spread it with a spoon around the meatballs. The tops of the meatballs should not be completely covered with potatoes, but stand out in the form of a kind of mounds.
  14. Rub the hard cheese on a medium grater and distribute it over the potatoes.
  15. Cover the form with foil and put it in an oven preheated to 180 degrees. Cooking potato casserole with meatballs and cheese for 50-60 minutes.
  16. Then we remove the foil and send the form into the oven for another 10-15 minutes, to form a golden-brown crust.
  17. Potato casserole with meatballs and cheese is ready. Remove the dish from the oven and sprinkle with chopped green onions on top.
