Ingredients

For the dumplings:

  • 150 g rolls, rolls or white bread (from the day before)
  • 120 ml milk, warm
  • 30 grams sugar
  • 3 pinches cinnamon powder
  • 1 egg (s)
  • 1 pinch (s) salt

Also:

  • 1 packet vanilla sugar
  • 1 egg (s)
  • 1 tablespoon sweet cream
  • 30 g flaked almonds
  • 30 g breadcrumbs
  • 75 g butter
  • powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. For the bread dumplings, heat the milk, sugar and cinnamon in a saucepan or in the microwave. Cut the rolls into cubes and pour the warm milk over them and briefly work in the milk so that all the bread cubes are moistened. Add the egg and knead everything with your hands to a homogeneous mass. Let the mass swell for approx. 30 minutes.
  2. In the meantime, bring lightly salted water to the boil in an appropriately large saucepan and turn down the temperature. Form 6 dumplings of the same size with moistened hands (2 pieces per person) and then let the dumplings steep in the gently simmering water for about 20 minutes, turning the dumplings every now and then. Then take them out of the water and let them drain on kitchen paper or in a sieve.
  3. For the breading, mix the breadcrumbs and flaked almonds in a deep plate and crush them lightly with your fingers. Whisk the egg, cream and vanilla sugar in another plate. Roll the drained dumplings first in the egg cream and then in the breadcrumb mixture until they are coated all around, repeat the process if necessary.
  4. Heat the butter in a pan and fry the breaded dumplings until golden brown.
  5. Serve sprinkled with powdered sugar. It goes well with hot berries with a kick and a scoop of vanilla ice cream
