Braided Bread with Basil and Garlic

What could be better than fresh homemade baked goods! We prepare basil bread with a golden-brown crust, wonderful taste, and aroma. A little effort – and beautiful wicker bread with basil and garlic can even decorate a festive table.

Ingredients

For the test:

  • Warm water (t = 35-40 ° C) – 270 ml
  • Olive oil – 15 ml (1 tablespoon) + for greasing the bowl
  • Flour – 400-450 g
  • Dry yeast – 10 g
  • Sugar – 40 g
  • Salt – 1.5 teaspoon

For filling:

  • Fresh green basil – 50 g
  • Olive oil – 45 ml (3 tablespoons)
  • Garlic – 2 cloves
  • Salt – 1 pinch

Directions

  1. Dissolve the yeast in warm water, add salt, sugar, and olive oil. We mix. Gradually introduce flour.
  2. We begin to knead the dough with a wooden or silicone spatula. The dough will be sticky at first, but keep kneading until elastic. Flour is different, so you may need a little more or less. But do not add too much so that the dough is not too dense. I needed 450 g flour (about 3.5 cups with a capacity of 200 ml).
  3. The dough should be soft and elastic, not sticky to your hands. Put the finished dough in a greased bowl, cover with cling film, and put in a warm place for about 1 hour to rise.
  4. The dough should approximately double in size. Cooking the filling. Separate the basil leaves from the twigs. Combine basil leaves, peeled garlic, salt, and olive oil. Grind the herbs and garlic with a blender.
  5. From the specified number of ingredients, two braids will turn out, therefore we divide the approached dough into 2 identical parts. Roll each part of the dough into a rectangular layer 3-5 mm thick. I got a layer of dough 37×30 cm in size, heat the oven to 170 degrees.
  6. Distribute the filling evenly over the surface of the rolled dough, not reaching about 1.5 cm to the edges. Roll the filled dough into a tight roll. We put the roll with the seam down and cut it lengthwise, not reaching the edge of 1-1.5 cm.
  7. We intertwine the halves of the roll with a cut outward (we wrap one part onto the other and interweave the halves together several times, along the entire length of the roll).
  8. We pinch the ends of the dough so that the braid does not unwind. Cover the baking sheet with parchment and put the wicker there.
  9. We bake wicker bread with basil and garlic in an oven preheated to 170 degrees for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown. We form the second braid in the same way. You can bake two braids at the same time. I baked them one at a time. While the first braid was baking, I covered the second with cling film so that the dough did not dry out.
  10. Basil bread is ready. Let the bread cool for about 15 minutes – and you can cut it.
