Fish in Bread, in Turkish (Balyk Ekmek)

Balyk ekmek is a Turkish fast food dish, a hot dog with fish. The name translates as “fish in bread”. Traditionally, back ekmek is cooked in a bun, but I suggest cooking it in lavash. You can take such a snack in pita bread with you to a picnic or work.

Servings: 2

Ingredients

  • Mackerel – 1 pc.
  • Lavash (thin, square) – 2 pcs.
  • Bulb onions – 1 pc.
  • Tomatoes – 2 pcs.
  • Lemon juice – 1-2 tbsp
  • Olive oil – 2 tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Ground black pepper – to taste

How to cook balyk ekmek (fish in bread):

Directions

  1. Cut off the head of the fish and remove the entrails. Wash the abdomen thoroughly and pat dry with paper towels. Using a knife along the ridgeline, cut off both fillets. Remove all bones as much as possible.
  2. Transfer the fish fillet to a baking sheet with paper. Season each fillet with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Bake the fish in an oven preheated to 190 degrees for about 15 minutes.
  4. Cut the onion into rings or half rings. Also cut 2 medium-sized tomatoes into rings.
  5. Combine olive oil and lemon juice in a small bowl.
  6. Place the pita bread on a work surface and brush it with a mixture of butter and juice with a brush.
  7. Layout a row of tomato rings on one side and put a layer of onion on top (take the amount to taste).
  8. Top with fish fillets.
  9. Form a tight pita roll. Prepare a second roll with the remaining ingredients in the same way.
  10. Before serving, if desired, dry the roll until crisp in a grill pan or electric grill.
