Hot Sandwiches with Cheese, Potatoes and Onions

It is very simple to diversify the croutons we are used to – prepare an egg mixture with the addition of grated potatoes, cheese, and finely chopped onions, put on slices of bread, and fry until golden brown. Such mouth-watering hot sandwiches with cheese, potatoes, and onions are a great reason not to skip breakfast!

Ingredients

  • White bread – 6 slices
  • Hard cheese – 100 g
  • Potatoes – 70 g (1 pc.)
  • Onions – 50 g (0.5 pcs.)
  • Sour cream (or mayonnaise) – 1 tbsp
  • Egg – 1 pc.
  • Salt to taste
  • Ground black pepper – to taste
  • Vegetable oil (for frying) – 3-4 tbsp

Directions

  1. Chop the onion as finely as possible. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt and mash with your hands to soften the onions and have time to cook.
  2. Grate potatoes in a bowl with onions on a coarse grater. Lightly squeeze the potatoes with onions with your hands and drain.
  3. Grate cheese and add to potatoes and onions.
  4. Beat in an egg, add sour cream, salt, and black pepper to taste. Add salt carefully, as the onions have already been salted and the cheese also contains salt.
  5. Mix.
  6. Put the resulting mixture on the slices of bread and flatten.
  7. Heat 2 tablespoons in a non-stick pan (!) tablespoons of vegetable oil. Put the slices of bread with the cheese and potato mixture filling down in a frying pan. Reduce heat to low, cover pan, and fry for about 5 minutes, until golden brown.
  8. Gently, using a wide spatula, turn the sandwiches with cheese, potatoes, and onions and fry for another 1 minute under the lid.
  9. Put the finished hot sandwiches on paper towels to remove excess oil. Fry all the sandwiches in the same way, adding oil to the pan as needed. Then transfer the sandwiches to the serving plate – and you can start your meal!
