Forshmak Classic

This forshmak recipe is not complicated, you don’t even have to stand by the stove. Prepare a classic Jewish forshmak and it won’t get lost even on the most plentiful holiday table!

Ingredients

  • Salted herring 1 pc.
  • Onions 1-2 pcs.
  • Sour apple 1 pc.
  • Loaf (bread) 2-3 slices
  • Boiled water (room temperature) 1 glass
  • Butter (20 g) 1 tablespoon.
  • The spoon sugar 0.5 teaspoon
  • Vinegar (optional) 1 teaspoon
  • Citric acid 1 pinch or lemon juice to taste
  • Ground black pepper 1 pinch
  • Greens for decoration to taste

Prepare herring fillets. Peel and wash the whole herring. (Depending on the degree of salinity, the herring can be soaked in milk for 2-4 hours.) Cut the herring into fillets, separate the bones.

Remove the crust from slices of bread.

Directions

  1. Pour the bread without the crust in a bowl with boiled water.
  2. Peel the apple.
  3. Slice the apple.
  4. Cut the herring fillet into pieces.
  5. Chop the onion.
  6. Combine chopped foods. Squeeze and add bread.
  7. Pass everything through a meat grinder. Mix.
  8. Add oil. Add ground pepper, citric acid, sugar. You can season with vinegar (table 3% or apple cider). Mix well.
  9. Decorate with herbs.
