Polish Herring Appetizer

Polish herring is an original appetizer made from salted herring, apple and onion fillets. Rather, it is not even an appetizer, but a salad, because the ingredients are complemented by a thick sour cream and mustard sauce. Herring in sour cream can be served with fried potatoes or simply with rye bread. Unusual and very spicy!

Ingredients

  • Salted herring (fillet) – 150 g
  • Sour apple – 1 pc. (150 g)
  • Red onion (or yellow) – 0.5 pcs.
  • Sour cream – 1.5 tbsp
  • Mustard – 0.5 teaspoon
  • Sugar – 0.5 teaspoon
  • Lemon juice – 2 teaspoon
  • Salt – 1 pinch
  • Ground black pepper – 1 pinch
  • Dill (for serving) – 1-2 branches

Directions

  1. Prepare all the ingredients you need for making Polish herring with apple and onion. I used a ready-made salted herring fillet. If you have a whole fish, fillet it and carefully examine the resulting fillet for small bones. The apple must be sour, with firm and juicy pulp.
  2. Cut the herring fillet into strips about 1 cm thick.
  3. Peel the red onion and cut into thin half rings. (If you use regular onions, it is better to marinate them. The simplest marinade is suitable: 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of sugar.)
  4. Peel the apple, remove the core and cut into thin slices.
  5. Transfer the sliced ​​apple to a bowl, drizzle with lemon juice and stir.
  6. Add half the sour cream to the apple, mix again.
  7. Add pieces of herring and onions there.
  8. Season the fish salad with the remaining sour cream and mustard. Add sugar, salt and black pepper.
  9. Toss the herring, apple and onion gently.
  10. Place the herring appetizer in a salad bowl, garnish with sprigs of fresh dill.Polish herring is ready to serve.
