Russian Salad with Herring

Russian salad with herring will be appropriate both on the festive table and the everyday one. The salad is very tasty, and such a classic combination as herring with potatoes has been tested over the years.

Ingredients

  • Salted herring – 1 pc.
  • Large potatoes – 3-4 pcs.
  • Onions (preferably red) – 1 pc.
  • Chicken eggs – 1-2 pcs.
  • Vegetable oil – 2 tbsp
  • Hot mustard – 1 teaspoon
    (or soft with grains – 1 tbsp)
  • Salt to taste
  • Vinegar (optional) – for pickling onions

Directions

  1. For the “Russian” salad you will need salted herring fillets, potatoes, chicken eggs, onions, unrefined vegetable oil, mustard, herbs, vinegar.
  2. Using a brush, thoroughly wash the potato tubers under running water. Then, without peeling, boil the potatoes until tender. We take the boiled potato tubers out of the water into a plate.
  3. Together with the potatoes, set the chicken eggs to cook in a separate pan. Boil hard-boiled eggs, cool in cold water.
  4. Peel the red onion, wash it, cut it in half. Cut one half of the onion into rings, and leave the other half of the onion to decorate the salad.
  5. Onions are often very bitter. If you come across such a bitter onion, it doesn’t matter. Onion bitterness can be removed simply. To do this, place the chopped onion rings in a bowl of vinegar, diluted in half with water, for 15 minutes.
  6. You can buy ready-made herring fillets, or you can cook salted herring fillets yourself.
  7. Cut the herring, discard the insides, clean and wash the inside of the belly. Then we cut off the head of the herring, cut the herring in half along the ridge, remove the ridge and rib bones. Remove the skin from the herring fillet.
  8. Cut the herring fillet into small pieces.
  9. Peel the boiled eggs, cut them into slices.
  10. Prepare herring salad dressing: mix vegetable oil with mustard. You can take unrefined sunflower or olive oil. We also take mustard according to our taste preferences: hot mustard or soft mustard with grains.
  11. We also need greens to decorate the salad. We wash it under cold water, dry it.
  12. To decorate the herring salad, cut a lily out of half of an onion.
  13. Peel and chop the boiled potatoes.
    Put potatoes on a plate, salt them. We spread slices of herring fillet, slices of boiled chicken eggs, onion rings.
    Season the Russian salad with oil and mustard. Add any greens to the salad.
    Russian herring salad is ready.
