Volovany with Cheese and Nuts

Volovany with cheese and nuts is a delicious and beautiful addition to the home table and not only. Thanks to their unusual shape in the form of roses, they can be prepared for any holiday and served as a hearty snack. These volovans differ not only in the way they are formed, but also in that they are baked right away with the filling. Ready-made puff yeast dough, which can be bought at any store, saves time.

Ingredients

  • Yeast puff pastry – 250 g
  • Bryndza (or feta) – 130 g
  • Hard cheese – 80 g
  • Walnuts – 50 g
  • Egg (yolk) – 1 pc.
  • Fresh parsley (for serving, optional) – to taste

Directions

  1. Prepare all ingredients. Choose hard cheese according to your taste. Instead of feta cheese, you can use feta. Remove the puff yeast dough from the freezer in advance and defrost.
  2. Grate hard cheese on a coarse grater.
  3. Chop the cheese into small pieces with your hands. If desired, it can also be grated on a coarse grater.
  4. Cut the walnuts into small pieces.
  5. Put the defrosted yeast puff pastry on a floured board. Roll into a thin layer.
  6. Cut the dough into four equal pieces. I used a curly knife. Now work with each one in turn. Turn on the oven to preheat to 200 degrees.
  7. Divide hard cheese and feta cheese into four parts. Place a fourth of the hard cheese and feta cheese in the center of the dough. Make four cuts diagonally from the bottom of the filling.
  8. Lift the bottom of the dough, wrap the filling and pin the ends tightly.
  9. Now lift the dough on the opposite side. Wrap the filling and seal the ends again.
  10. Then lift and wrap the dough on the right side.
  11. Do the same on the left side. Take the workpiece in your hands and round it slightly from the bottom. Spread the edges of the dough on top, giving the shape of a rose.
  12. Top with 1/4 chopped walnuts. Also do with the rest of the blanks.
  13. Line a baking dish with foil or parchment. Transfer the blanks to the mold. Whisk the egg yolk lightly with a fork in a bowl and brush over the puffs. Send to an oven preheated to 200 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Roasting time depends on the power of your oven
  14. Volovany-roses with cheese and nuts are ready.
  15. Cool the volovany a little and serve, garnish with fresh parsley leaves if desired.
